Hairpin Leg Plant Stand Hack – Concrete Side Table

It was probably a good year or so ago that I picked up this little hairpin leg plant stand off the side of the road. Hairpin legs were just becoming all the rage, so I thought I could make something with it.hairpin leg plant stand

I was thinking of attaching a nice piece of wood on top and making a side table but time went by and it never happened. I wasn’t exactly sure of the best way to attach it so that was a sticking point for me.

A month or so ago I saw this wonderful kmart plant stand hack on instagram from @justanotherwifeslife and checked out her tutorial on her blog. ‘I could do that’, I thought.

And so I did!

It’s been a little while since I DIYed and I had a fair bit of help from my husband who mixed up the concrete and checked it was level.. ok he really did it all, but I supervised :)

Luckily I didn’t have to spend a cent! My father in law had some concrete in his shed and he also had an old pot plant tray lying around that was the perfect size. Great Success!

It took about a week to dry completely… it was quite a wet, cold week in Adelaide, and we kept it in the shed to dry. Once it was dry the tray came off easily and voila…

Have A Seat! Chair Style Guide

When it comes to chairs there are so many out there. You might hear words like Eames, Queen Anne or Bentwood thrown around but have no idea what they mean!

I’ve done a bit of research for myself lately and thought I’d share the names (and some background) on various chair styles & designs.

Ball Chair

The Ball Chair was designed by Finnish furniture designer Eero Aarnio in 1963. The Ball Chair is also known as the globe chair and is famous for its unconventional shape. It is considered a classic of industrial design.

Bentwood/Thonet Chair

Bentwood objects are those made by wetting wood, then bending it and letting it harden into curved shapes and patterns.

The No 14 Chair & No 18 Chair by Thonet are the most common and well known bentwood Chairs.

Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman
Official titles are Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671)
They are Made of molded plywood and leather, designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company and released in 1956. It was the first chair that the Eames designed for a high-end market.

Barcelona chair

A modernist style chair designed in 1929

Club Chair

A club chair is a type of armchair, usually covered in leather. It was created and made in France.

Wishbone Chair

Designed in 1949 by Danish designer Hans Wegner.

Tolix Chair

This simple industrial metal chair was designed by Xavier Pauchard.

Eames DSW Chair

Another one from Ray & Charles Eames designed in 1948. DSW stands for Dining Side Wood.

Replicas of this chair are currently very popular.

Windsor Chair

A Windsor chair is a chair built with a solid wooden seat and the chair-back and legs pushed into a drilled hole in the seat.

Ladder Back Chair

I think this style is fairly self explanatory :)

Queen Anne

Queen Anne style furniture (Developed during and after the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain) featured curved shapes such as the cabriole legs and cushioned seats

Before and After TV Cabinet

My home seems to be ever changing. Especially when you find a great bargain like this TV Cabinet for $20!

Before and After

It was a black wood grain veneer with silver handles, that had fallen out in some places.

A few coats of white paint later and some new handles from Ikea and it was a perfect fit in our little home… almost…

We ended up rearranging all our furniture as it was too big to fit where we used to have out TV. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we love our new home configuration.

Special thanks to my husband who did most of the painting!

Baby Bonanza

A couple of weekends ago I helped plan a baby shower with a few friends for a new friend and her first baby!

We know it’s a girl so there was plenty of pink! Plus we had way too much food but a lot of fun.

Here are some decorations we made and games we set up – plenty of easy DIY.

Ready to pop! Popcorn jar.

Handwriting is not a strong point of mine (I did all the printed materials) but my sister in law created this wonderful welcome sign. (She actually make the chalkboard too, a few years ago now.)

Another friend made these beautiful rosettes with patterned paper.

Here’s a few of the games, including babies frozen in ice,  jelly babies in a novelty over-sized baby bottle and guessing games.

On the signs, this chalkboard style font is a favourite of mine lately. It’s called fff tusj.

Moody Monday

I really enjoy creating a mood board and seeing how various items come together to create a space.

Below is one of the mood boards I did for an assignment. I wanted to create a neutral and natural base for an open and comfortable feel, with feature red and teal and various patterns and textures for some fun and warmth.

Before & After Film Office

This ones goes back a couple of years now, but in keeping with Before & Afters (see my last post Before & After Inspiration) here’s one I helped out with.

My husband is a film maker and he and his partner rent a small office in the city.

It certainly isn’t the creative warehouse space you might hope an up and coming film company would be in, like this one – ooh wouldn’t that be awesome!

But anyway… the guys and I had some cool creative ideas to liven the place up. We got to work and painted and they found some artwork and new furniture that fitted their style better.

Before and After Inspiration

My husband and I both love a good transformation!

His favourite would be the kind you see on World’s Strictest Parent’s, Supernanny or Hoarders where someones life is changed for the better and they wake up to new ways of doing things.

I do love that too, it’s so great to see someone make changes for the better in their lives and it’s also great to see someone make a change for the better in their home. Which is, I believe, a change for the better in their lives.

Here a few great before and after pictures I found to help inspire you!

1. Before and After Kitchen.

A great kitchen revamp without getting a whole new kitchen.
